Accessible Access to the Observatory

The Observatory is wheelchair accessible. Accessible parking behind the gate is available upon request:

  • Pay the parking fee at the main parking lot.
  • Drive to the gate and call the observatory main number, (831) 623-2465. Someone will walk down and open the gate for you.
  • Drive up and park next to the observatory. Note the area around the observatory is loose gravel.
  • Use the access ramp on the East side of the building.
  • The main telescope requires climbing a tall, steep ladder, but we have a number of telescopes available outside that can accommodate virtually any limitation. Please contact us in advance so we can make sure the proper telescope is available.
  • When you are ready to leave please let our volunteers know so that someone can escort you past our other guests and unlock the gate for you on your way out.

It is helpful if you contact us 24 hours ahead of time so we can better prepare for your arrival. Please email info at fpoa.net.

Note that in Fall and Spring access to parking near the Observatory is restricted for all. At sunset we close the hill at the restrooms. We require anyone arriving after that time to park by the restrooms and walk up the hill. Thus if you require ADA access you must be at the gate by sunset (especially if you will be unable to walk 150 feet up a hill with loose gravel.) For your safety and the safety of our other guests we may not be able to accommodate you if you arrive later. Again, if you contact us in advance so we can discuss this with you.
